CROSS-BORDER COOPERATION BETWEEN SICILY AND MALTA REINFORCED

The INTERREG IIIA Italy-Malta Cross-border Cooperation Programme aims at fostering the integration between the south-east coast of Sicily and Malta, by promoting common cultural, economic and social resources in the framework of sustainable development. The Italy-Malta Programme is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.
The Programme has funded 13 projects for cooperation. These projects are aimed at promoting socio-economic integration between Sicily and Malta and the promotion of natural and cultural heritage, through cooperation between local authorities and public bodies such as municipal and provincial administrations, universities, trade associations, regional and governmental research institutions and cultural associations Italian and Maltese.
Most of the projects has as its objective the strengthening and promotion of cultural identities of the two countries. In particular, projects CULTEXCHANGE and KASA focused on the recovery and enhancement of the archaeological heritage through trade and tourist sites. Projects SMART ISIDEM, VOYAGE & VOIR and SAPERI & SAPORI concern on the promotion of traditions and culture in common between the two countries. The project PRISMA finally promotes the development of an offer integrated tourist.
CAVALGO project aims to optimize shipping links between Malta and Sicily, through the adaptation of structures docking of hydrofoils and host, thus contributing to develop the transport system borders.
The Programme Italy-Malta also pursues the objective to promote the integrated management of natural resources and urban environments through the projects INWATERMAN (management and monitoring of water resources), MONITAMAL (monitoring of levels of chemical contamination) and MASPI (sustainable management beaches). Finally the projects MEDPOT and METIC have as their aim to provide support services to SMEs of the two countries to stimulate innovation and competitiveness.
